Renting DVC Points

In my research I have found a real gem. Long story short, we can stay the 1st night at the All Star and the rest of the week at a deluxe resort for $680. It's just a matter of renting "points" from people who own Disney timeshares. It's totally legit, you just have to clean your own room and bring some extra towels. We'd even get a kitchenette.

This would also save $76 per couple and $11 per child overall because we wouldn't get a day of Dining Plan we wouldn't need that first night.

So here are my totals, adjusted from the last "sample trip."

1 couple, no kids over 3: $1559
1 couple, 1 kid over 3: $1800
1 couple, 2 kids over 3: 2041

That's one night in a value hotel, 6 nights in a deluxe hotel (with kitchenette!), 6 days' park hopper tickets, and 6 days' dining plan. Pretty cool!

Soounds tempting... however, I would search teh google groups and talk to some folks who have done this before.

I have no trouble bringing my own towels and we certainly can clean up after ourselves. Are these joints on Disney Property? With buses coming to get us and all?

I also assume that quote you listed would be way before all our secret discounts and coupons...?

Mousesavers.com is a good website to learn about the Disney Vacation Club and how it works. Basically, timeshare owners get a certain number of points per year and can rent them out, usually at $10 per point. You can look at charts on this site to see how many points it costs to stay in each hotel at whatever time of year. I already figured it up for Old Key West, which is the cheapest and also one of the better resorts.

I've looked at lots of webpages to make sure this is legit, including TourGuideMike's site. The Unofficial Guide book also talks about this stuff. Google groups would be a great resource, too; let me know what you find. You just have to check the renter's references carefully. Disney sends you a confirmation of your reservation the same as if you were paying them directly.

One thing to keep in mind is that a lot of these rooms sell out quickly. That means it's wise to start looking for a renter a year in advance. The earliest you can actually book the resort is 11 months before the trip.

Sorry, that was www.mouseowners.com.

Oh, and the Contemporary and the Grand Floridian are in the same category as the "home away from home" resorts that the Vacation Club includes, but they aren't part of it. You can see which ones are on the mouseowners.com site.

I want to stay in the Polynesian or the Animal Kingdom lodge one day when I'm rich. Those look so great!

I am reading alot of posts on google groups (group rec.arts.disney.parks )

and am reading about alot of repeat customers... people who go every year and have rented from the same person 3 or 4 times...

"I've rented from a DVC owner four times. Never had a bad experience.
It's one of the BEST deals you'll ever get at Disney, especially if you Sunday - Thursday nights, when point values are lower. "

"Go to the DISboard site and find the threads on renting DVC points - read the FAQ and browse through the threads to see how it all works amd get the lay of the land. Decide where you might like to stay and use the points
calculator to see how many you will need to rent.. "

This tread seemed important

just looking over this again... why would we stay one night in a value hotel...?
why not just go down a day later?

That's a possibility, too. It would just cut out that extra day to relax. You can't really see everything in 4 days, so we'd still need 5 day tickets.

Taking off the 1 night at All Star (and 1 day tix) would only save us $87 because we would still have to buy the same amount of Dining Plan days (they're tied to the DVC stay). But if we did cut the trip short 1 day and spend 1 night in a value resort, that would shave off $286.

The reason for the 1 night in a value resort is that DVC resorts go up over $200 a night on Friday and Saturday nights, as opposed to $80 all the other days.

Switching resorts isn't a big deal. You just pack an overnight bag for the 1st night, stow everything in the van next morning, and drive over to the other resort during your midday break.
